What is mucinous carcinoma?
Tumor mass found in different parts of the body with excess mucous component is called as Mucinous carcinoma. Most of the internal organs in the human body like intestine, colon etc is covered with mucous epithelium. Mucinous carcinoma appears as an ulcerated jelly like mass in various parts of the body. Mucinous Carcinoma commonly affects the body parts like breasts, colon, lungs and skin. The cells in the affected area start dividing uncontrollably and excess mucous formation occurs to cover these cells giving it a jelly like appearance. There are different types of mucinous carcinoma caused by different causative agents. Studies are going on to identify the high – risk group for this disease.
Triggering factors
There are many inducers for mucinous carcinoma in humans. The most common triggering factors of this disease are early menarche or the starting of the first menstruation, late menopause or the stopping of the menstrual cycles in the middle age, late pregnancy, after the age of 30 and above and hormone replacement therapy done for other physiological problems etc. In some cases mucinous carcinoma becomes aggressive and spreads fast in to other parts of the body. In such cases it becomes difficult to treat mucinous carcinoma.
Mucinous Carcinoma Treatment instructions
The common treatment for mucinous carcinoma includes chemotherapy, radiation therapy, lumpectomy and immunotherapy. To control the symptoms of mucinous carcinoma chemo therapy can be successfully used. Medications are used to destroy or stop the growth of the mucinous carcinoma cells in most effective way possible. Radiation therapy destroys each and every cancer cells which may act as the center for growth of the new cancer cells.
In case of the mucinous carcinoma of the breast, lumpectomy is the best procedure to cure the disease. This procedure involves the removal of the carcinoma tissues and a layer of surrounding healthy tissue to avoid the chance of recurrence of mucinous carcinoma. The remaining healthy part of the breast is retained. The immune therapy option for treatment works by increasing the immunity levels of the body and thus reducing the effect of cancer cells on our body. In extreme cases of breast cancer, sometimes mastectomy is also done to save the patient. In this treatment, the complete breast tissue is removed. Though mucinous cancer is not of common occurrence and are not posing high risk to the patient the researches to improve the treatment is still going on.
