A Look Into Colo-Rectal Mucinous Adenocarcinoma
The word adenocarcinoma means malignancy of the epithelial tissue. The word “Adeno” denotes “gland” and carcinoma denotes the malignant tumor. Adenocarcinoma of colon and rectum has two sub types namely signet ring cell and Mucinous Adenocarcinoma . Adenocarcinoma which contains 60 % or more mucous in them is classified as mucinous adenocarcinoma. Though there are different types of colorectal cancers, 90-95 % of the colorectal cancers are mucinous adenocarcinoma.
This type of cancer attacks both exocrine as well as endocrine glands in the body. It is believed that the mucous cells present in the mucinous adenocarcinoma help in easy spreading of the mucinous cancer. This makes the mucinous adenocarcinoma an aggressive type of cancer and the one difficult to treat. The colorectal mucinous adenocarcinoma affects the colon and rectum.
Any extra growth of cells in the glands can develop in to adenocarcinoma. If the tumor formed in the colo-rectal area is big there are good chances that it will develop in to cancer. Colorectal cancer detection always occurs in the later stages and is difficult to treat. Polyps grow for several years as non- cancerous adenoma and then develop in to cancer. Studies show that by the age of 50 one in four people might have developed polyp. 10 -15% the adenocarcinoma are mucinous adenocarcinoma type.
Mucinous Adenocarcinoma Treatment
Though it is difficult to treat mucinous adenocarcinoma due to its gelatinous nature and the faster spreading ability, it is necessary to do treatment to reduce the difficulties associated with this cancer. The common treatment methods used are laparoscopic surgery, chemical therapy and radiation therapy. The method used will depend on the position of the mucinous adenocarcinoma and the size of the mucinous cancerous mass. Laparoscopic surgery involves removal of the mucinous adenocarcinoma cells by surgical method. Laparoscopic surgery requires minimal invasion.
Chemical therapy includes use of medicines that are taken internally to treat mucinous adenocarcinoma. This is a common method to treat this type of cancer. The chemical interferes with the free growth of the cancer cells and reduce their spreading ability. Radiation therapy is another important treatment option for mucinous adenoma cancer. Radioactive chemicals are used to destroy the malignant Mucinous Carcinoma cells. Exposing the mucinous adenocarcinoma affected area to the radioactive material in a controlled way will kill the cells. Sometimes, some of these methods are used in combination to get more successful result while treating mucinous adenocarcinoma.
